The Contributions of New Americans in California
New American Economy has produced 51 reports on the contributions of new Americans in each of the states and the District of Columbia including the impact of immigrant entrepreneurship on local economies and estimates of the number of jobs that might be created locally from an increase in the availability of employment-based immigrant visas. California is home to almost 10.5 million foreign-born residents making up 27 percent of the state population and comprising the largest foreign-born population share of any state in the country. California immigrants are 91 percent of sewing machine operators, 78 percent of agricultural workers, and 57 percent of software developers. Immigrant-owned businesses generated $20.2 billion in business income in 2014, and the state’s foreign-born households were able to contribute more than one in every four dollars paid by California residents in state and local tax revenues.
